In a proud moment for Indian science and technology, a Chennai-based team, Photonics Odyssey, has made global headlines by winning the “Most Inspirational Award” at NASA’s 2025 International Space Apps Challenge. Their groundbreaking concept — a sovereign, phased-array satellite internet infrastructure — impressed the judges for its vision to revolutionize digital connectivity in remote areas.

The team, comprising Manish D., M. K., Prasanth G., Rajalingam N., Rashi M., and Sakthi R., developed a model aimed at tackling one of India’s most pressing challenges: the lack of broadband access for more than 700 million people. By reducing dependency on traditional ground infrastructure, their proposed system seeks to deliver affordable, reliable internet even to the most rural corners of the country.

NASA highlighted the Chennai innovators' achievement in its official announcement, noting their creativity, practicality, and potential for real-world impact. The 2025 edition of the Space Apps Challenge saw over 1.14 lakh participants spread across 551 local events in 167 countries and territories, making it one of the largest collaborative tech events globally.

Indian and Indian-origin participants continued to shine at this year’s challenge, with several teams earning recognition for excellence in science, creativity, and social innovation — a testament to India’s growing global influence in STEM and space research.

Launched in 2012, NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge encourages citizens worldwide to use open NASA data to solve pressing global problems. Over the years, it has evolved into a leading platform for young innovators, coders, and entrepreneurs to showcase how technology can make the world better — both on Earth and beyond.

With their inspired vision, Team Photonics Odyssey has not only brought glory to India but also taken a bold step toward a digitally inclusive future powered by space technology.
